Dr Israels is a paediatric oncologist who has been coordinating the Collaborative Wilms Tumour Africa Project since 2014 and ‘SUCCOUR’ – ‘Supportive Care for Children with Cancer in Africa’ – since 2019.

She worked for several years in Blantyre, Malawi  as a paediatrician, providing clinical service in general paediatrics and on the oncology ward where she carried out some locally relevant clinical research projects,  which led to a PhD on ‘Management of Children with Cancer in Malawi’ (2010). Thereafter she served as the Co-Chair of the Committee on Paediatric Oncology in Developing Countries (PODC) of the International Society of Paediatric Oncology (SIOP) and coordinator of the SIOP PODC working group for adapted treatment guidelines (2011 – 2014). In the latter role she (co)-authored several pragmatic adapted treatment guidelines for children with common and curable cancers (Wilms tumour, retinoblastoma, Burkitt lymphoma and supportive care) in low income countries.

Dr Israels is currently based as paediatric oncologist at the Princess Máxima Center for Pediatric Oncology in the Netherlands where she is the coordinator for clinical research in sub- Saharan Africa for the Outreach Programme. She enjoys collaborating with likeminded colleagues and together, step by step, finding the best way forward to create progress and make an impact.
