The 60th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology (JSPHO) will be held at the ROHM Theatre Kyoto and Miyakomesse near the Heian Jingu Shrine.

The theme of the meeting is “Children First! To a Brighter Future for the World: Lessons from children fighting intractable diseases”.

”Children First” is not just about putting children at the top of our priorities. It is also about rethinking our society from the point of medical care and education of children. By doing so we can improve medical care for all, and create a better society. This is because we believe that children with illnesses and disabilities can show us the way forward, and be the lights that guide us to a better future. Basic research into serious illnesses such as pediatric cancer and blood disorders requires multi-disciplinary approaches, and is part of the total care that includes family, education, government, and the whole of society. It is a starting point for community development, not just for pediatrics.

With this gathering of many medical professionals, researchers, survivors, and families we strive to promote exchange. It is our hope that this will provide opportunities for improvements in care for pediatric cancer and blood disorders, as well as all areas of medical care, health, and welfare.

JSPHO was established in 2011 with a merger of the Japanese Society of Pediatric Hematology founded in 1960, and the Japanese Society of Pediatric Oncology founded in 1985. The society has more than 2,000 members, mainly physicians and other medical personnel.

In 2004, with a merger in mind, the founding societies headed by Prof. Tohru Sugimoto (Dept.Pediatrics, Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine) and Prof. Tatsutoshi Nakahata (Dept. Pediatrics, Kyoto University) coordinated their annual meetings in Kyoto. The success of these meetings was the driving force behind their future merger. This year marks the ninth meeting since the merger of both societies.

The meeting is being organized by the Japanese Society of Pediatric Oncology Nursing (founded in 2002), and the Children’s Cancer Association of Japan (CCAJ). The CCAJ, which is celebrating their 50th anniversary this year, has been a longtime supporter of research in Pediatric Oncology.

In addition, the 50th Congress of the International Society of Paediatric Oncology (SIOP), chaired by Dr. Akira Nakagawara, will be held in Kyoto 16-19 November at the Kyoto International Conference Center. This is the first time in 20 years that this meeting will be held in Japan.
