SIOP Oceania has successfully completed our trip to Papua New Guinea, funded by project funds approved by the SIOP Senior Management Team, and delivered the training to physicians, nurses and allied health workers in Lae, Morobe Province and Alotau, Milne Bay Province.

We had over 40 participants in each location attend the training. We also had an opportunity to tour the medical facilities which allowed us to adapt our training to the specific needs of each province. Following the provincial visits, the full delegation regrouped in Port Moresby for a week of masterclasses and clinical training at Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH) for PMGH staff. The educational programme in Port Moresby was comprehensive, addressing supportive care and oncology-specific skills for childhood cancer, as well as additional paediatric palliative care training.

We have gained valuable insights which will help guide our training initiatives going forward. We have created a PNG Paediatric Palliative Care WhatsApp group to continue training our identified trainers and to share experiences and resources.
