The SIOP Rehabilitation and Physical Medicine Working Group (RPM-WG) facilitates the development of and promotion of the incorporation of evidence-based Rehabilitation and Physical Medicine services into the care of children and adolescents affected by cancer globally. This WG is part of the SIOP Supportive Care Network.
Scope
The overall focus of paediatric oncology rehabilitation and physical medicine is to enhance the quality of life of children throughout the cancer trajectory (i.e. from diagnosis through to survivorship and including palliative care).
This field encompasses several key objectives that are integrally connected:
- Preventing and managing acute, short-term, and long-term effects and symptoms.
- Supporting functional independence, optimal physical functioning and activities, and child development.
- Focusing on participation and reintegration into daily life activities.
- Promoting healthy behaviours (e.g. physical activity and play).
