On World No Tobacco Day [Sun, May 31, 2026], SIOP joins the global health community to raise the alarm on tobacco and nicotine product exposure among young people.
15 million adolescents already use e-cigarettes. 40 million use tobacco.
The appeal of these products to young people is a major concern – we need sustained action in prevention, regulation, education, and child health protection.
Preventing early addiction is critical and all children and young people deserve protection from the harmful impacts of nicotine and tobacco use and second-hand smoke exposure. SIOP puts a spotlight on children affected by cancer, childhood cancer survivors, and their caregivers for whom tobacco and nicotine exposure represents a major avoidable risk factor that may exacerbate health complications and long-term adverse outcomes.
We must act to:
- Restrict marketing that appeals to young people
- Strengthen regulation of tobacco and nicotine products
- Prioritise prevention and education.
This World No Tobacco Day, we reaffirm our commitment to protecting children and young people from preventable harm.
