In April 1952, Dr. Odile Schweisguth opened Europe's first dedicated pediatric oncology department at Gustave Roussy. A co-founder of SIOP itself in 1969, she pioneered a "total care" approach to childhood cancer and helped drive survival rates from just 10–20% in the 1950s to around 85% today.

The SIOP Global Standards Framework for paediatric oncology units in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) has now been published in Pediatric Blood & Cancer (PBC), the official journal of the International Society of Paediatric Oncology.
