The SIOP Africa Congress 2026 brought together the global paediatric oncology community in Lagos, Nigeria, from 13–17 April 2026, marking another milestone in the shared mission to improve outcomes for children with cancer across Africa. The congress served as a dynamic platform for collaboration, knowledge exchange, and innovation.

The congress welcomed a total of 354 delegates, including 63 participants from Nigeria and 291 international delegates, highlighting the growing global engagement with paediatric oncology efforts in Africa.

Participants represented a wide range of countries, with strong attendance from across the African continent. The meeting also attracted attendees from Europe, North America, Asia, and South America, reflecting its international reach and significance.

The congress programme featured an extensive scientific agenda, beginning with two pre-congress days offering a combined 14 specialised workshop tracks. These sessions provided targeted learning opportunities and practical training across key areas in paediatric oncology.

Interest in the scientific programme was further demonstrated by the submission of 302 abstracts, showcasing the breadth and depth of research and clinical work being conducted across the region and beyond.

SIOP Africa 2026 also recognised outstanding contributions and achievements within the community. Awards presented during the congress included:

  • Best Poster Award: Alimatu Salam
  • Best Oral Presentation: Ebenezer Wiafe
  • Rising Star Award: Kauke Zimbwe
  • Lifetime Achievement Award: Prof Lorna Renner
  • Friend of SIOP Africa: Prof Aziza Shad

These honours reflect the dedication and impact of individuals committed to advancing paediatric cancer care and research across Africa.

The congress was hosted in Nigeria under the leadership of the Local Organising Committee, chaired by Dr Adeseye Akinsete, with Dr Adedayo Joseph serving as Chair of the Scientific Committee. The event was supported by SIOP Africa President Prof Jennifer Geel, alongside the SIOP Africa Board and wide network of partners and collaborators.

As the SIOP Africa community continues to grow and strengthen, plans are already underway for the next congress, which will take place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in 2028.

The SIOP Africa Congress 2026 reaffirmed the importance of collaboration, innovation, and sustained commitment in addressing the challenges of childhood cancer across the continent. By bringing together clinicians, researchers, advocates, and partners, the congress continues to play a vital role in driving progress toward improved survival rates and better care for every child with cancer in Africa.
