SIOP Africa is pleased to open the Call for Nominations for the position of Treasurer. Self‑nominations are also welcome. This is a strategic leadership role at the heart of SIOP Africa’s governance, and we invite members who are committed to improving outcomes for children and adolescents with cancer across Africa to apply.
The deadline for nominations is October 26, 2026, 1:00 PM CEST/Geneva. Following the close of nominations, the SIOP Africa Board of Directors will assess all eligible candidates and select the Treasurer. The successful candidate will take office in December 2026.
Why This Role Matters
The Treasurer helps ensure that SIOP Africa’s resources are secured, managed and used in ways that advance its mission. As SIOP Africa develops its programmes, partnerships and activities across the region, sound financial leadership is essential to its long‑term sustainability and to the trust placed in it by members, partners and funders.
As an officer of SIOP Africa, the Treasurer contributes directly to strategic decisions: helping the Board set priorities, weigh opportunities and risks, and ensure funding is directed where it can have the greatest impact.
About the Role
The Treasurer role combines two closely connected functions. The Treasurer leads the first and makes sure the second is well run.
Strategic financial oversight and governance (the Treasurer’s primary focus)
- Provide financial oversight of funds from industry and philanthropic sources, making sure they are used to further the goals and mission of SIOP Africa.
- Work with the SIOP Africa Board of Directors to set financial priorities and make recommendations on the use of funds in line with SIOP Africa’s strategy.
- Steward funds that have been raised, making sure they are used transparently and in line with partner and donor commitments and SIOP policies.
- Review budgets and financial reports, and report on SIOP Africa’s financial position to the Board and to members.
- Identify financial risks and opportunities, and contribute to plans for SIOP Africa’s financial sustainability and fundraising.
- Serve on the SIOP Africa Board of Directors and as a member of the SIOP Africa Executive Committee.
Day‑to‑day financial administration
The Treasurer is not expected to carry out day‑to‑day accounting personally. Instead, the Treasurer works closely with the SIOP Africa Board and SIOP Secretariat to ensure these processes are accurate, transparent, and aligned with the Board’s decisions.
The two functions go hand in hand: good oversight relies on reliable day‑to‑day records, and good administration relies on clear strategic direction.
Who We Are Looking For
SIOP Africa is seeking a Treasurer who:
- Is committed to SIOP Africa’s mission and to strengthening paediatric oncology across the region.
- Thinks strategically and can connect financial decisions to organisational priorities.
- Is comfortable reviewing budgets and financial reports. A formal accounting qualification is not required, but experience with budgeting, grant or programme management, or financial oversight is an advantage.
- Acts with integrity, transparency and accountability.
- Works well with others, including Board colleagues, the Secretariat and partners across different countries and settings.
- Can commit the time the role needs, including taking part in Board and Executive Committee meetings.
Eligibility & Selection Process
- Candidates must be SIOP members in good standing with SIOP membership fees for 2026 paid and residing in Africa.
- Self‑nominations are welcomed.
Following the close of nominations, the SIOP Africa Board will assess all eligible candidates against the requirements of the Treasurer role.
In addition to relevant financial experience, the Board will consider candidates’ demonstrated record of effective organisational leadership and governance, including previous leadership within SIOP or comparable professional organisations; their ability to work collaboratively and constructively within governance structures; their record of delivering on responsibilities associated with previous leadership roles; their understanding of fiduciary responsibility and conflicts of interest; and their capacity to exercise sound, independent judgement in the interests of SIOP Africa as a whole.
Previous service within SIOP or another professional organisation may therefore be considered as part of the assessment of suitability for the role.
The Board may seek references or additional information regarding candidates’ previous governance or leadership roles and may invite candidates to a short interview.
Term of Office
- The term is three years, beginning in December 2026.
- The Treasurer may serve one additional term if re‑selected.
