She was trained in Johannesburg South Africa. In 1995 she completed her masters project on the occurrence of infections among paediatric oncology patients in SA. Here her enthousiasm was founded to work within the supportive care field of paediatric oncology. She returned to the Netherlands in 1996 working as a consultant in the AMC/EKZ ,Amsterdam in the paediatric oncology unit. Her thesis on treatment and prevention of infections in children with cancer was completed in 2004, and she has continued doing research in this field as both first and last author, and continued to train PhD students in this field. She is actively involved in guideline development in all fields of supportive care in children with cancer.
