The World Health Organization (WHO) has launched the Global Status Report on Cancer 2026: The Future We Choose Together, providing the most comprehensive assessment to date of global progress in cancer prevention, control, and care.
The report brings together new data on the global cancer burden, health system capacity, and the experiences of people affected by cancer. It examines trends in incidence, mortality, survival, risk factors, and the delivery of cancer services across the continuum of care — from prevention and early detection to diagnosis, treatment, palliative care, and survivorship.
Despite significant scientific advances, the report highlights persistent inequities in access to cancer prevention, treatment, and care, with major differences both between and within countries. It emphasises the urgent need for integrated, people-centred approaches, stronger health systems, improved monitoring, and meaningful engagement of communities affected by cancer.
The report outlines three strategic shifts to accelerate progress: better capabilities, better protections, and better value, alongside seven recommendations to guide governments, international organisations, and partners towards more equitable cancer outcomes worldwide.
SIOP welcomes the publication of this important global resource and encourages members and partners to explore the findings and consider how the recommendations can support efforts to improve outcomes for children and young people with cancer worldwide.
The Global Status Report on Cancer 2026 is available to access via the WHO Institutional Repository for Information Sharing (IRIS).
